Providing round the clock support for delivery service

J and P Vehicle Deliveries collect and deliver different types of vehicles, from cars to vans, all around mainland UK using their transporter trucks. With the risk of falls from a height, as well as aggression towards drivers, the company was looking for a safety solution to give them that extra confidence in their team’s wellbeing.

J and P’s Administrator, Kirsty Noe, gave us an insight into the safety challenges of vehicle transportation, and how having a lone worker solution in place helps support these situations.

“My role is to look at the driving times of our fleet of drivers and allocate their jobs, as well as assisting with general admin in the office.

The drivers are on the road for the majority of the week and sleep out. We have cameras that surround the trucks, and an incident button. If there’s a traffic incident, or the cameras pick up on someone moving around the truck, the drivers can use this incident button to record the next three minutes of footage. 

But obviously that’s not calling the emergency services if they’re in danger, and in that case, they would have to ring somebody. Relying on this system, and on the drivers to tell us if there was anything wrong to ensure their safety, wasn’t really enough. 

Our Director Paul was looking into Pick Protection for another business. The more he looked at the functionalities, the more he realised that drivers who were out on their own could benefit from the features. If they were to encounter an aggression in a lay-by and they didn’t feel safe, or they were in a road traffic accident and needed someone to come out to them ASAP, getting help would be a lot quicker with a solution such as this.

We went with Pick Protection’s fully monitored PG Smart and PG Click solution for our drivers and office team. The Fall Detection is especially important for our drivers, as they’re working on the decks of the vehicle transporters that can be up to 16-feet high. 

Being able to activate an SOS using the PG Click button is really useful, as the drivers will sometimes leave their phone in the cab, meaning they still have a way to raise an SOS. The app also allows drivers to pre-empt if they’re feeling particularly unwell, just by putting information in which can then be seen by the monitoring team.

We’ve been so bowled over by what the PG Smart and PG Click does. It works exactly how we want for the drivers, and even has a safe zone that ends a Time at Risk automatically when they get home, in case they don’t remember to end this themselves. We’d looked at other options but they just seemed very basic. 

When it comes to monitoring, there have been times the drivers have accidentally raised an alarm and spoken to Pick Protection’s partner operators, and they all gave extremely positive feedback about the way that it’s been handled. 

They weren’t made to feel like they were being told off. The response from the operators was more along the lines of, “No, we don’t mind you setting it off by accident, we’re just glad you’re safe.”

Our drivers really appreciated that. It means they’re not nervous of having the PG Click fob in their pocket when they’re bumping against cars and things like that, or having the PG Smart App open and accidentally setting it off. 

This was a concern for us; that our team would be wary of having the app and button on them in case they accidentally activated either. Now they’ve been put at ease by the operators, they’re willing to have these to hand in case they really need help.”
